SECURITY ISSUES
Many people believe that e-commerce would be even more successful if a secure mechanism for value exchange could be developed. More and more technologies are being developed everyday in order to ensure security. In a survey conducted by City University, it was noted that 52% of the respondents feel that it is safe to have secure transactions over the internet, while 49% believe that they are as secure as telephone based transactions. This statistic shows that the trend of e-commerce is highly increasing as in previous surveys most people were reluctant to conduct business on the internet due to security. Also not many people are knowledgeable regarding the issue of security. Many protocols and algorithms to ensure safety have been developed. All they need now is assure people about their safety in order to encourage e-commerce.

HOW DO YOU PAY?
Many people feel that paying online also reveals personal information. This is not true. More information on you can be achieved by credit card payments. These are some examples of how unsafe the methods of payments we use now:

There are several ways of paying for products purchased online.

NET CHECKS:
A net check is similar to a regular check. You enter the data in a form on the internet and it is then sent to the merchant where it is converted into a paper check. Users registered with NetCheque accounting servers are able to write electronic checks to other users. These checks may be sent through e-mail or as payment for services provided through other network protocols. When deposited, the check authorizes the transfer of account balances from the account against which the check was drawn to the account to which the check was deposited.

DIGITAL SIGNATURES:
Digital Signature was first proposed in 1976 by Whitfield Diffie. A digital signature transforms the message that is signed so that anyone who reads it can be sure of who sent it. These signatures have a secret key used to sign messages and a public one used to verify them. A digital bank would offer electronic bank notes: messages signed using a particular private key. Different denominations have different keys. These electronic bank notes are authenticated using the corresponding public key, which the bank has a record of, which then assures both merchant and consumer of safety and honesty.

DO'S & DONT'S OF E-COMMERCE
Why are some businesses successful and some not in this new trend? Most of this concerns their site design. Well here are some of the reasons that attract and make some businesses more successful than others

DONT'S DO
1. Mandatory Registration:
Most stores ask shoppers to register an account with a user name and ID even before they put items in their shopping baskets. This stops most customers because when they select an item they are not committed to buying it yet.
  • At least wait till the customer is ready to purchase their order
  • Best idea - ask them to register after they place their order showing them you trust them and so they can trust you too.
2. Spam:
Sending junk mail is good promotion however it is annoying and can label you as dishonest and amateurish.
  • Honesty and trust is very important don't loose it by invoking in such behavior. Make the customer trust you so they will return to your site over and over.
3. Dynamically Generated Sites:
These are sites generated automatically through pages created from a database. It may seem a good thing to be "dynamic" however search engines ignore dynamic sites therefore reducing customers as the main source of customers in through search engines.
  • If you want to know whether or not your site is invisible to the world check for question marks in your URLs.
4. Graphics:
Most online merchants have big graphics right at the front of their pages…..they view them faster as they have faster connections. However most customers have regular modems and it is annoying for them to wait just for the page to load.
  • Don't include big graphics, especially right at the storefront (front page).
  • Make sure the graphics are small and the customer gets in your site faster ready for some shopping.
5. Awkward Domain Name:
Why did Amazon.com generate more money than barnesandnoble.com ? What would you rather type into your web browser?
  • Just like coming up with names for your business, a site name is just as important. Catchy names attract more customers.
6. Passive Marketing:
Many merchants think that after opening a site customers will find them. Well they will find them as well as their competitors.
  • Don't wait for customers to come to you. Go find them.
  • Think of sites they will visit and place ads or else do revenue sharing deals in return for referrals.
  • See what sites send you most sales and focus on those.
